Join Electrolux Design Lab 2012
Filipinos have always proven their creativity can be put on top with the best of the best worldwide. How many times have we heard Pinoy designers of accessories and gowns to softwares and games conquered international competitions.
This year, Electrolux Design Lab, on it's 10th Anniversary, invites international design students to join in another challenge that is tied to Electrolux professional heritage in a theme that stimulates all senses.
Electrolux Design Lab is a global annual design competition inviting students and recent graduates of industrial design to compete for a six-month paid internship and prize money by submitting ideas that develop the sensory experience of home appliances. This year the jury will also take special note of the aesthetic qualities of the concept and the way textures and surface materials have been used.
Eight finalists will each be invited to participate in a final event in the autumn of 2012 held within a European city (to be announced) to present their individual concept to a jury of expert designers. The jury will consider entries based on intuitive design, innovation, aesthetic qualities and consumer insight when awarding the first prize of a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre and 5,000 Euros. A second prize of 3,000 Euros and third prize of 2,000 Euros are also on offer.
As demonstrated in the Cube by Electrolux, the world of professional cooking is all about the experience. It’s not about achieving the perfect inner temperature of a steak for the sake of science or performance. It’s about designing the best possible experience for your guests. The creative force behind the experience is the merger of intuitive and innovative appliances with the creativity of the chef and carefully selected high quality ingredients.
The brief for Electrolux Design Lab 2012 challenges design students to draw inspiration from professional experience creators (chefs, architects, interior designers, hotel designers etc.) to design home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience. It might be through state of the art technology or it might be through a clever blend of textures and surfaces
Entrants will also need to consider the heritage of Electrolux. Submissions should reflect Scandinavian Design values by being sensitive to the environment, providing intuitive ease of use and aesthetic appeal
“I believe the importance of our sensory perception is underestimated in a lot of today’s design. Too much importance is accorded to the visual. What if we could incorporate our other senses into design? Could we smell who’s calling? Or feel what’s on TV?” says Henrik Otto SVP of Global Design at Electrolux.
Deadline for entry is June 1, 2012 via the Electrolux Design Lab website: www.electrolux.com/designlab.

Unilab Ideas Positive: Php 1.5 million seed money to be given away
Calling college students! Help transform communities with the Filipino youth.
Young minds coming together can spark great ideas.
Believing in the youth’s ideas and their desire to make a positive difference, Unilab Ideas Positive, a social marketing clinic and competition-in-one, provides a venue for college students to share their innovative and sustainable ideas to address the health and wellness concerns of their communities—and turn those ideas into reality.
To help the youth turn their ideas into concrete health and wellness programs for their communities, Unilab Ideas Positive provides them with:
A) A 3-day social marketing boot camp, where they learn and understand social marketing approaches from a pool of experts using current and relevant social marketing practices and case studies, and
B) A seed money so they can implement their social marketing programs within six months.
Now on its third year, Unilab Ideas Positive gets even better with a focus not only on positive ideas, but also on positive outcomes—creating a difference where it matters, in partnership with the Filipino youth.
Unilab Ideas Positive is now expanding from Metro Manila to the entire Philippines, covering North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. More college students will, thus, have an opportunity to help transform their chosen communities with their social marketing ideas.
And because more positive ideas will be developed, more communities will benefit. Fifteen (15) teams will each be given Php100,000 seed money from Unilab Foundation for the implementation of social marketing programs—a total of Php1.5 million seed money.
Indeed, it’s an even more exciting Unilab Ideas Positive this year with bigger prizes at stake. But more than the prizes, it’s the opportunity to come together for a shared goal of a healthier nation that makes Unilab Ideas Positive a rewarding venue for the Filipino youth to make a significant contribution where it is needed most.
Want to be part of this transformative journey towards a healthier Philippines? It’s time for you to team up for a healthier nation! Start sharing your idea by visiting www.unilabideaspositive.com.

Snacking without the guilt Blog Contest
Snacks can give you an energy boost to help fuel your body between meals. Your body uses up the carbohydrate stores in your liver (which help maintain a normal level of blood sugar) in 4 to 6 hours. You need food to replace them. Many people can benefit from eating snacks.
But most of the snacks available in the market are what we call junk foods which are perceived to have little or no nutritional value at all. Common junk foods include salted snack foods like chips (crisps), candy, gum, most sweet desserts, fried fast food and carbonated beverages (sodas) as well as alcoholic beverages. There are also snacks that are with protein of poor nutritional quality, more fat than (and nearly five times the sodium of) potato chips, pork rinds meet the common criteria for junk food.
Soyami Soya Chips is your healthy substitute to what we call “junk foods.” It is made with Real Soya, no MSG, High in Protein and Calcium and O% transfat. It is available in 3 flavors: Original, Pizza and White Cheddar. It is now out in the market. Soyami Soya Chips makes healthy snacks for everyone.
Here's the mechanics of the blog contest:
1. This contest is open to all BLOGGERS who have at least 6 months of blogging and are permanent residents of the Philippines.
2. Bloggers will make a blog entry about the experience of “eating snacks without the guilt”. Please share your experience eating “Soyami Soya Chips.” Soyami Soya Chips is your healthier choice to snacking! It is made with Real Soya, no MSG, High in Protein and Calcium and O% transfat. It is available in 3 flavors: Original, Pizza and White Cheddar. It is now out in the market.
3. Also include in your entry the links below. It is also a requirement that you like Soyami on Facebook and follow on Soyami Twitter.
4. Post your entry at our Facebook Fan Page http://www.facebook.com/HealthySoyami with your name, email address, and location. Also tweet and mention us @HealthySoyami on Twitter.
Criteria for judging:
25% – Creativity (way of writing where thoughts and feelings are expressed in a unique and imaginative way)
25% – Originality (content submitted must be original and should not be copied from other works)
50% – Relevance to the theme (must be about the experience of eating the snack without any hesitations of eating the snack)
Contest Period: October 24, 2011 – December 15, 2011
Awarding will be scheduled on the January 14, 2012
Prizes:
Grand Winner - Php 10,000.00 + 3 months supply of Soyami Soya Chips

Unilab Ideas Positive: A competition and advocacy in one
I am really quite amused and amazed of what kids can do this days.
Early this year, someone invented a double-headed broom to collect large debris and fine dust simultaneously. I was floored (no pun intended) when I found out from BBC that a 5-year old boy from UK named Sam Houghton invented it to help his father sweep leaves in their front yard.
Reminds of a remarkable feat accomplished last year by a group of students who called themselves Team Biggkas of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P). These smart and young advocates bagged the grand prize of the Unilab Ideas Positive program for its farm-in-the-city concept. Thre group introduced teaching hydroponics gardening to mothers in Barangay San Joaquin in Pasig City (my home town) so they have their own sustainable source of vegetables within the community. Mothers made their first harvest of lettuce and kangkong in April this year. The local government of Pasig City has expressed a desire to replicate the same program in other barangays.
Inspring, right?
Well, the good news is Unilab Ideas Positive, a social marketing competition for college/university students in Metro Manila and Calabarzon areas is again accepting entries this year.
The program encourages college students who want to make a difference to form a team, and think of a solution to a community's health and wellness problems. Just like in 2010, The winning team will get seed funding from Unilab of PhP100,000 so they can implement their social marketing plan. Two runner-ups will get PhP75,000 each for their own implementation. Of course, the winning groups will also receive cash prizes for themselves and trophy for the school.
Interested students can form a team of five and submit their idea through http://www.unilabideaspositive.com until July 18. Ten semi-finalists will be chosen to undergo a 3-day camp in August where social marketing thought-leaders led by 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Efren Penaflorida and social marketing guru Dr. Eduardo ‘Ned’ Roberto will help teams to firm up their social marketing plans.
Wow! This sounds exciting. If only I am 10 years younger and enrolled in college, I can brainstorm ideas with my buddies and join this worthwhile competition which is actually more of an advocacy of Unilab, a world-class company which has been known to promote the Bayanihan spirit, the Filipino trait of working together to achieve a common goal.
Five finalists teams will be chosen to defend their plans on Sept 18 before a multi-sector panel of judges that will pick the team that wins the seed money from Unilab.
