I have yet to see the film but I've been reading a lot of reviews about Bagong Hari, an action film which was a box-office disaster mainly because it was shown in theaters the time when the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution erupted (Eh, ikaw ba naman nagliliparan na tora-tora at may tangke na sa kalsada manonod ka pa ba ng sine. Kahit may passes ka pa baka ipamigay mo na lang sa kagalit mo e.) It also didn't help when it was graded as Rated X because of the violence in the film.
The movie is a work of the great Mario O' Hara, who is a regular topic in my film class in college. He is the same guy who gave the Philippine cinema masterpieces like Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang and Babae sa Breakwater.
Bagong Hari, which stars Dan Alvaro, Joel Torre, Crami MArtin and other notable veteran actors, will be screened FREE to the public this Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m., at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde, Cultural Center of the Philippines. I just hope I can find time to catch this film which may be our only chance to see what is said by movie critics as the finest Filipino action film ever made.
